Ramifications of Homeschooling

Hello,

My name is Doris Anne Beaulieu. I have a website-Life’s Ultimate Test dot com-on which you can learn more about my mission to change the face of home schooling.

I attended a parochial school as a child in the 1950's. In this Catholic school I was sheltered from the realities of the world around me-from swearing, from public displays of affection, from slang. These are often some of the same things that modern home schooling parents aim to protect their children from. A superior… Continue

This Just In

The Customer is Always Wrong
The Retail Chronicles

From Mom and Pop general stores to huge chains, it is impossible to think of American experience without thinking about the buying/selling culture that is retail. It is almost a rite of passage to pay your dues in a retail environment. The Customer Is Always Wrong: The Retail Chronicles is a funny, yet informative collection of essays by writers from all corners of the literary world. Elaine Viets, author of the Dead-End Job mystery series, describes all the crazy jobs she's done to write her books; Jim DeRogatis (author of Let it Blurt) describes hanging out with Al at Al Rocky’s Music Store; Colson Whitehead describes how three summers working a Long Island ice cream store put him off ice cream and desserts of all kinds for the rest of his life; and filling out the table of contents are Wade Rouse, Michael Beaumier, Po Bronson, Stewart Lewis, Victor Gischler, Timothy Bracy, Anita Liberty, Trisha Thomas, Kevin Smokler and T Cooper.

This book however not only shines a light on the absurdities of retail, but finds the delight in it as well. If it weren’t for the customer, our economy would not function. And for every abusive customer or moronic employee, there are people that come into our lives and change its course forever.

Psychics, Crooks and Unexplained Phenomena

Is there a real 'Psychic' out there? Could you trust the messages you are getting from the people who hold out to be in touch with other realities?

Wolfgang Schmidt is a journalist and wanted an answer to those questions. He travelled the world to find the human being with the extra-sensory capacity.

Was he successful?

In his book Psychics, Crooks and unexplained phenomena Schmidt documents his encounters with mediums, mystics and scam artists. Coming from a background of no-nonsense, hard-nosed investigative journalism, the author looks at claimed phenomena with a jaundiced eye-and still is impressed with some of the incidents experienced in his travels.

Schmidt's writing is colourful and because the stage is the whole world, his stories grab you and make it fascinating reading-even if you are not interested in psychic phenomena. A book reviewer commented, "...it reminds me of the X-files.¿

THE DAMNED by William Ollie (Limited Edition)

It came on a Friday afternoon, wiping everything good from the land. It came, followed by Hell on earth, bands of brutes and nightmarish creatures, the hopeless and… The Damned.
Scott thought it had to be a joke when a raving lunatic heralding the end of the world broke onto the airwaves. Then a road rage incident of bullets and blood left him in a place devoid of light, where rasping screams and whispered moans bubbled up from the darkness.
Now Scott has woken next to a bloated corpse in a deserted rehabilitation center. Outside, the world is dust and ash. People are screaming, people are dying.

And Scott Freeman’s nightmare has just begun. Review

ONE OF THE WICKED (A Mick Callahan Novel)

By Harry Shannon
Five Star
November, 2009

Psychologist and talk show host Mick Callahan owes his buddy from the Navy Seals. Big time. So when Bud “Bone” Stone comes asking for help, Callahan, despite some problems of his own, cannot refuse. It seems Stone cut some corners trying to make a fast buck. Now he’s a big mess involving some small time con men, a lot of missing money, and a Vegas wise guy. And when Stone decides the fastest way to fix the problem is to steal drug money from a local gang leader, all hell breaks loose. A surprising new character enters Mick’s life. He gets kidnapped, beaten and dragged to the construction site of an eye-popping new casino in Nevada’s Valley of Fire. There are sinister strippers, murdered goons and weird bodyguards. We meet a giant European hit man and a mysterious gambler called ET. Once again, poor Mick is up to his neck in violence, only this time he’s also on the run from both the mob and the law.

One of the Wicked, the third novel in the Mick Callahan series, is "a page-turning and compulsively readable thriller that will keep you guessing to the very last scene."

"Mick Callahan is a man with a past, a mean right hook, and a radio talk show. He's pretty good at giving people advice - just not necessarily good at taking it. The real strength of this series is in its central characters, flawed, human, often funny, sometimes tragic, and the relationships among them."

"Dark wit, excellent writing and action-packed pace."

THE GOLDEN THREAD by Weston Ochse

Former star football player-turned cryptozoologist, Demitrius Johnson, is stranded in another dimension, where he spends his days advising the messianic Bastion on how to best rebuild a world he destroyed. With the help of a grotesquely bioengineered upper class, they foil an
assassination attempt, then travel across the length and breadth of a continent to root out its source. During this journey Demitrius discovers different species, abnormal evolution, philosophical conundrums and the very heart of the world's strangely reminiscent culture.

Meanwhile in our own backyard, ex-Special Forces inter-dimensional bounty hunter Kimo Kapanui tracks sign of otherworldly travel by investigating Weekly World News sightings from around the globe. Lemmanuel Kraus, former heroin-addict, U.S. Marine Hero and evisceration test-dummy for Bastion’s mother, gathers around him a flock of followers and bears witness to all that he’s seen and heard. Kimo wants to help Demitrius come home. Lem wants to once again meet his messiah. Together, they seek to find a way back.

All comes together in a shocking conclusion that involves chupacabra, bigfoots, saber-toothed tigers, satyrs, radioactive villagers, and a grotesquery of mutated actors, all who gleefully perform across the pages of this stand-alone second novel of the Cycle of the Aegis. Recalled to Life, the first book of the Cycle, began this road trip into a multi-dimensional heart of darkness. The Golden Thread continues this journey, taking all who dare into a cryptozoological wonderland where nothing is ever as it seems, and where a simple mistake can result in a lifetime of pain.

IS THAT WHAT PEOPLE DO? by Robert Shackley

A deft and comic writer, Robert Sheckley has long been recognized as one of America's preeminent science fiction authors. Sheckley is unquestionably at the top of his form with the short story, where he has an uncanny ability to turn the world inside out, creating a universe almost - but, disturbingly, not quite - like our own. Reading a Sheckley story is like buying a one-way ticket to a world with its own fantastic and wacky logic.
